NOTE: MAY TAKE A FEW SECONDS TO LOAD

Made for the GMTK 2023 Jam, with the theme "Roles Reversed".

TALYL is a reverse shoot-em-up: instead of fighting against hordes of enemies, you're the one in control of placing the horde to defeat a single ship! Using the six ship types available to you, how quickly can you defeat a single opponent? Be careful though, you can't place infinite ships. Rather, you have to spend points in order to buy each ship. When your ship survives, you regain the points spent on it. If the ship is shot down, you don't get any points. And if the ship deals damage to the opponent, you gain even more points! You also gain 10 points every half-second, so it's impossible to game over.

Post-Jam update is out now, with changes to how Ship B and D operate, ship cost & point gain adjustments, enemy AI changes, an improved tutorial, and more stats on the victory screen.

I have created a  reversed version of this game (a regular shoot-em-up) which can be found here.

CONTROLS / TUTORIAL:

  • When the game starts, you are in the "pause" menu. Here you can select ships from the top row and place them in the area at the far right.
  • Once satisfied with your ship placements, press the "resume" button to watch them begin their attack.
  • When resumed, you can click anywhere on the screen to pause the game again and place more ships.
  • Each ship works differently, so try different combinations to find success (read below)

SHIPS:

  • A, 40 cost - moves straight forwards toward the opposite edge, and will deal some damage upon hitting the enemy.
  • B, 60 cost - moves straight forwards for a time before moving towards the top/bottom edge, firing a missile towards the far side at the turn. If shot down before firing a missile, will fire the missile when hit.
  • C, 60 cost - same as A, but moves twice as fast.
  • D, 100 cost - moves straight forwards for a time before moving towards the enemy's location (as of when it turns)
  • E, 120 cost - heads for the opposite top/bottom edge, firing multiple missiles directly towards the opponent as it goes.
  • F, 120 cost - same as A, but moves slower, can survive one hit, and fires missiles straight forwards.

I do like the retro game feel and the unique idea behind it. Great Game in a short amount of time.

There is potential  for further iterations with more hero ships or unlocking the ability to gain points to be able to place down a boss.
